Household resources and responses to bushfire risk in Mount Dandenong

This research study examines whether households have the resources they need to prepare for bushfire, what they are doing to prepare for bushfire, and what might be preventing households from doing more to prepare for bushfire.

The study will involve:

  • A survey of all households in Mount Dandenong looking at the resources households have to prepare for bushfire;
  • A household interview about what households are doing to prepare for bushfire; and
  • A household interview to look at what might be preventing households from doing more to prepare for bushfire.

The study intends to identify and understand what might be limiting households from doing more to prepare for bushfires. It is hoped that the findings from this study will inform policy by identifying new ways to assist households.

The study is a PhD research project through the University of Melbourne, Department of Resource Management and Geography. It is not affiliated with local councils, state government, or the Country Fire Authority. The project has been approved by the Melbourne University Human Research Ethics Committee.
